Tulum VIDEO TOUR BELOWStaring out for eternity over the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean, the temples of the walled City of Tulum present a unique aspect of the Maya legacy. Astronomy and celestial navigation, maritime trade, even weather forecasting were among the Maya achievements of this small but powerful city state. Tulum rose to prominence around 1200 AD, in what is referred to as the Post-Classic Period in Maya History, a little more than 300 years before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. Tulum was one of the first places to encounter the invaders from across
the ocean and also one of the first to taste the bitter fruit of
conquest since it was still inhabited when Cortez landed here from Cuba in 1519. Today Tulum again stands proud, as one of the more popular Maya sites for visitors. Its position, on a cliff right on the edge of the sea, creates a breathtaking backdrop and beauty unlike any other ancient Maya city, and Tulum, in this respect, is quite unique. Also worth a visit for its amazing plaster carvings is the smaller and much less visited site of Ek-Balam on the road from Cancun to Chichén-Itzá.
