Maya Artisans

In a small village called MUNA just 30 minutes to the south of Mérida, on the way to Uxmal, it's well worth a diversion to visit a fascinating Mayan Workshop called "Los Ceibos".

Working from a small traditional "palapa" or straw-roofed house,  you will find some of the finest ceramic artists in México.

Using careful research the artisans make incredibly accurate reproductions of ancient Maya objects using traditional materials and techniques employed 2,000 years ago in this region.

So good is their work that major International Museums, such as the Metropolitan in New York, beat a path to their door to learn from their methods and to buy these beautiful objects.

There is a small restaurant behind the workshop where most days they serve a delicious traditionally cooked chicken meal called "pollo pibil" which is wrapped in banana leaves, cooked slowly under the ground, and melts in the mouth - this is highly recommended.

I like to start with a Pina Colada cocktail - which is served with huge slices of fresh pineapple hanging over the edge of the glass  - simply delicious!

All in all MUNA is well worth a stop-over and for lunch there as well if you have time. Don't forget to purchase one of the beautiful ceramics - you won't find such amazing quality and authenticity anywhere else and they are wonderful souvenirs of a fascinating culture.
